- History Note: The Walsall Red Books are a series of directories relating specifically to the Borough of Walsall. The first edition was published in 1872 by J.R. Robinson. J.R. Robinson's son, William Henry Robinson, took over the family business when his father died in 1874, W.H. Robinson's business supplied stationery and printed and published many local books. Robinson also wrote several books under the pseudonym Maurice Grindon and was a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. He was a keen local historian and founder of the Walsall Literary institute which was formed in 1884.
From 1912 the Walsall Red Books were published by T.Kirby and Sons. In 1920 E.F. Cope & Co. took over the publishing and printing of the Red Books until their demise in 1939. - Format: Photograph
